This is a really great initiative. You can donate money to help get these energy-efficient, rugged, kid-friendly laptops into the hands of children in developing countries. Check out this video from Scribe Media, where Yves Behar, who designed the physical form of the laptop, talks about its features, capabilities, and reason for existing.
"Now we in the developed world want something that people in the developing world have. I like that idea!" -Yves Behar
i just looked at the website and all the software that it comes with (which is quite a bit, plus there's lots more available for download).
the 50 million dollar question, of course, would be, if i buy one for my kids, would they use it, or have they been spoiled by being able to use my computer?
Okay folks, I did it! Made a donation which is gonna send one of these awesome kid-size laptops to a kid somewhere in Afghanistan, Cambodia, Haiti, Mongolia or Rwanda (I'm rooting for Rwanda, but I don't care too much who gets it), and one just like it to me (which I'll be giving to my daughter).
Multiply's Pezident has done the same... who's with us? Unless they extend the program, it ends the 31st. You can also (if you don't want a slick kid-size laptop for some reason) just donate money to the OLPC Foundation, of course.
"Please accept my apologies for the delay in receiving your XO laptop. Give One Get One was such a phenomenal success that we over-taxed our order processing and payment systems. Demand exceeded supply.
Additional XO laptops are being built now and will be delivered in 45 to 60 days."
Okay, I can live with that timeframe. Would have liked to get it in February so I could give it to my daughter in March, but if I get it in March, I can at least get it to her in time for her birthday in June.
