Every year, Hilo hosts the Merrie Monarch festival, the "olympics of hula," dedicated to the memory of King David Kalakaua, known as the Merrie Monarch, who ruled from 1874-1891. Kalakaua was a patron of the arts, especially music and dance, and restored many cultural traditions.
